The Ten Checks
- Look for sagging or standing water after rain.
- Check seams and end caps for dark wet marks.
- Confirm hangers are tight and fascia is solid.
- Inspect inside corners for overflow stains.
- Flush every downspout and listen for free flow.
- Make sure outlets are not undersized for the roof area.
- Keep discharge points at least 8 to 10 feet from the foundation.
- Look for soil erosion, mulch washout, or basement dampness.
- Check guards for trapped pine needles and pollen film.
- Photograph changes so you can compare the same areas each season.
When a Checklist Is Not Enough
Call for a professional assessment when water overflows during moderate rain, gutters pull away from the house, fascia feels soft, or downspouts cannot be cleared from the top and bottom. These symptoms indicate a structural or capacity issue rather than ordinary seasonal cleaning.
A Simple Seasonal Schedule
Inspect in early spring before oak catkin season, again in late summer before fall leaf drop, and after any storm with strong wind or hail. Homes beneath mature trees may need more frequent visual checks even when the gutter interior is protected.
