Fall Gutter Preparation in NWA: A Month-by-Month Plan for Leaves and Storms

Fall is the most important season to prepare gutters in Northwest Arkansas. A system that starts October clean is far less likely to carry a frozen mat of leaves, acorns, and shingle grit through winter.

September: Inspect Before the Heavy Drop

Walk the property from the ground and look for sagging runs, open seams, loose downspouts, stains below the eaves, and soil washout. Trim branches that touch the roof where practical, but do not remove mature trees simply because they create debris.

This is the right time to repair pitch and fastening before wet leaves add weight to the system.

October and November: Manage Leaves and Acorns

A single cleanout before leaf season is not enough if the home sits under mature oaks. Leaf mats should be removed before they become saturated and compacted. Acorns and small twigs deserve special attention because they can bridge over openings and block downspout elbows.

Fine-mesh protection keeps this material on the roof surface instead of inside the channel, but the roof valleys and guard surface should still be checked after major wind events.

December: Prepare for Freeze and Sleet

Before the first freeze, confirm that every downspout flows freely and discharges away from walkways and foundations. Water trapped behind wet debris can freeze, expand, and pull on hangers or fascia.
